What is Eastern Bay Community Foundation?
The Eastern Bay Community Foundation (EBCF) is a Community Foundation encouraging people to leave a gift in their will or during their lifetime to benefit the Eastern Bay forever. People leave money to the Eastern Bay Community Foundation and the investment income is used to make donations to local charities and community groups. Donors can specify a particular charity that they want their annual distribution to go to, or they can leave it to the trustees to decide where their money is best needed.
How Does it Work?
Individual donors are encouraged to set up an 'Endowment Fund', which is managed like a sub-trust by the Eastern Bay Community Foundation. Monies can then be gifted to the endowment fund during the donors lifetime (in which case there are income tax benefits for the donor), or alternatively bequeathed in the donor's will.
All contributions to the fund established by the donor are invested responsibly by the Eastern Bay Community Foundation, who will then distribute the net income from the investment to the local community. This means your endowment fund can remain actively contributing for as long as you wish.

An endowment is a donation held as an investment designed to keep the endowment principle intact while using the investment income for causes specified by the donor.

This is entirely up to the donor. Some donors may identify specific charities that are close to their hearts or other local organisations to support, while others may choose a general area for their donations. Donors can also choose to make an 'unrestricted' gift, leaving the Eastern Bay Community Foundation to decide where appropriate funding support is most needed each year. Many donors undertake both; they specify a percentage of the annual distribution to go to specific organisations, and leave the rest unrestricted.
As part of a bequest, some donors prefer to donate a specific sum, or a percentage of their estate to the community in this way. |
