Douglas Bull QSM, JP - ChairmanDouglas was appointed to the Chair of the Eastern Bay Community Foundation in September 2015; he became a Trustee in October 2014. He has wide ranging governance experience as either a director or a chairman of cooperative companies, their subsidiaries and New Zealand Dairy Board along with its stand-alone entities both within New Zealand and overseas.
Douglas is a retired farmer and company director. His farming career was in the Bay of Plenty where he developed a large dairy farm which he recently sold. He and his partner Stephanie Johnson live in the previous farm homestead on Braemar Road. Early in his career he understood the need to participate and became a contributing member within the community and agricultural industry. He was awarded a Nuffield Scholarship to study in the UK and held executive positions within Federated Farmers locally and nationally. For over 20 years he was a dairy company director including 10 years on the NZ Dairy Board. His interest in governance came through such roles as the NZ Dairy Board, its Audit and Finance committee, along with chairing other subsidiaries like the NZ Dairy Research Institute, Whey Corporation and Ambreed. Douglas has considerable experience in leadership as a Rotarian with 40 years service. He is a Member of the Institute of Directors, a JP and Past President of the Eastern BOP JP Association. He has served within the community on a number of Trusts and committees. Douglas and his late wife Tess have a family of three grown daughters and six granddaughters. Douglas' interests are their Coromandel holiday home and boating; Rotary and his involvement in humanitarian work projects in the Pacific Islands. Barney GrayBarney was appointed as a trustee in May 2014 and represents the Whakatane ward of the Foundation.
Barney has lived in Whakatane since 1980 and for the first 25 years ran his own Chartered Accountancy business specialising in commercial and farming businesses, with particular interest in family trusts and estate planning. Barney was a district councillor under Mayor Colin Hammond for 6 years and has belonged to numerous community organisations over the years. He is now involved in real estate with The Professionals selling both residential and commercial properties. Robyn Towersey QSMRobyn is originally from Invercargill and moved to the Eastern Bay in 1978.
Robyn is an active member of the Eastern Bay community, In 2012 Robyn was awarded the Queens Service Medal (QSM) for her voluntary work in Health and Service in New Zealand and internationally through Quota International. Robyn is the Charter President of Quota International of Ohope. She was a member of the Project Hope Committee which raised $1.7 million to build the Whakatane Cancer Centre. Robyn was Foundation President and is a current trustee of Opotiki Community Health Trust and is an Hospice EBoP and Look.Good.Feel.Better volunteer. Miles ManderMiles was appointed a Trustee of the Foundation in June 2014 following its expansion to cover the wider Eastern Bay of Plenty.
Miles has lived in the Eastern Bay of Plenty since 1992. He has recently retired from his role as a Senior Manager with ANZ with 40 years banking and finance experience. Holds a Bachelors degree in Agriculture Commerce from Lincoln University and a Diploma in Banking from Massey University and is also a Registered Valuer. Miles is currently a Trustee on the BOP Rural Support Trust, has served on the Whakatane Intermediate and High School Boards of Trustees and has been very involved in rowing administration and umpiring. Keen on all sport, Miles is married to Debbie who works as a District Oncology Nurse, they have four grown up children and live on a rural block between Awakeri and Te Teko. Raymond Bruce SharpI am a kiwifruit orchardist and have a number of company directorships. I have recently resigned as Chairman of Directors of Eastpack Ltd (NZ's largest kiwifruit post harvest packing and coolstorer).
I am a retired Chartered Accountant having been in practice in Opotiki for 29 years until 2004. I was Chairman of Bay Trust for seven years. I have been involved with charitable work with Opotiki Old Peoples Home Society for over 30 years and am a Director of the charitable company Peria House Ltd (which operated elder care facilities in Opotiki until early 2017). my wife Lis and I have four adult children. I came to Opotiki in 1959, attended school here and have been here since, apart from time away at Auckland University where I did a B.Com degree and while working for Chartered Accountants in Auckland and Wairoa. My wife and I have developed gold kiwifruit orchards on East Coast Maori land in an effort to provide increased economic development and activity in the Eastern Bay of Plenty. I have had a long association with Opotiki and the East Coast people and community from my accountancy practice and from my involvement with farming on the coast. My wife Lis and I have owned farms in Opotiki, Matawai, Gisborne and the Waikura Valley. I am Manager of a number of forest partnerships set up in the early 1990's. Jacqui Hughes ONZMJacqui is well known identity in the Eastern Bay of Plenty having served four terms as a Regional Councillor during which time she was Chair of the Finance Committee and Deputy Chair.
Jacqui has also been an appointee to several boards and trusts, both at a national and regional level. She served six years as a Director of The Port of Tauranga Ltd. She retired in 2008 from her position as CEO of Eastbay REAP. Jacqui is involved in the arts, several environmental enhancement groups, is a member of U3A and at weekends is a hobby farmer on her Wainui block. Peter AnstisPeter Anstis was born in 1949 and belongs to a well-established Opotiki farming family. He has spent his entire life in the Opotiki district, and he and his wife Marnie have four adult sons.
His farming career has seen a shift from dairying to growing kiwifruit and he still runs a sizeable kiwifruit operation which has made the conscious decision to support the local community by trying to employ only locally based staff. For 20 years he has been a Trustee of Opac grower funds and is still on its payment and distribution committee. Peter was appointed to the Opotiki Community Foundation at its inception in 2008; he led it as Chairman and spearheaded its transition to the Eastern Bay Community Foundation. Helen Stewart
Helen Stewart has developed a passion for Kawerau's business sector and community since moving to the Eastern Bay in 2002 to become Executive Director of the Kawerau Enterprise Agency (KEA).
Helen has served on the Eastern Bay Chamber of Commerce and is past-President of the Eastern Bay of Plenty Justices of the Peace Association. She also sits on the Institute of Directors Bay of Plenty.
Helen brings this wealth of governance experience and understanding of the local and wider Bay of Plenty business community to her role as a Trustee of the Eastern Bay Community Foundation.
