Jacqui Hughes ONZM Trustee-Convenor Grants and Distributions

Jacqui Hughes ONZM

Jacqui and her late husband Fred originally came to Whakatane as teachers at Whakatane High School, however Jacqui is perhaps better known for her leadership and stewardship of REAP in the Eastern Bay of Plenty over a number of years, coupled with her interest and involvement in the Arts.

Jacqui has represented the region well as a Councillor on the Bay of Plenty Regional Council, also serving on the governing board of the Ports of Tauranga.

Jacqui's passions also lie in protecting our natural environment and she has been a strong supporter and working member of the saltmarsh and wetland volunteers of Wainui, Nukuhou and the Whakatane River and harbours. Jacqui is a 'roll your sleeves up' kind of woman, who has tirelessly served on many committees over a number of years. She has been a member of the Whakatane Kiwi Trust and worked on ensuring 'predator free' status for our national icon, on home turf.

A longtime supporter of the Arts in the district, has seen Jacqui work with a team to establish the Whakatane Summer Arts Festival, encompassing both creative and performing Arts, showcasing to locals and visitors alike,  the vibrancy and creativity that exists in our region.

Jacqui has a large native garden and an organic vegetable garden, along with a working farm in Wainui, to which she retreats at weekends. She has been a keen tramper and lover of the outdoors, and an intrepid traveller, Jacqui enjoys travel to far off, often unheard of places.

Jacqui is an enthusiastic and generous benefactor to the Eastern Bay Community Foundation, and is currently the Convenor of the Grants and Distributions Committee.
