The impetus to give back to his secondary school was strong for Tauranga based, Craigs' Investment Advisor Jon Murie. He felt that he had benefitted from a well rounded education at Opotiki College and twenty years on, he set about encouraging his class mates to think about how they could help the school and the students of today.

The Tu Kahikatea Scholarship was established and funded by random contributions from the leaving class of 1997. Jon was keen to make this a permanent legacy and secure scholarship, as well as broadening the support available to students currently attending the college, enabling them to fully participate in every aspect of the schools curriculum without the restriction of genuine financial hardship.

The Tu Kahikatea Scholarship is awarded every year to a student who has shown committment and effort during their time at Opotiki College and has worked to improve themselves, shown strength of character and leadership. This scholarship is to assist with the next step of learning as the student leaves the college. This scolarship is not the only focus of the endowment fund.

The Opotiki College Alumni Endowment Fund was launched in 2018 to provide a long term sustainable base from which to support todays and tomorrows students to gain the best possible education in Opotiki..

Contributions to the Opotiki College Alumni Endowment Fund are encouraged from past pupils, parents and those in the Opotiki District to ensure the continued success of students attending the college to become confident, connected and accomplished citizens in Opotiki and the wider communities of Aotearoa.
