Rangimarie Trust was established by long-term Ōpōtiki residents Jane and Jim Jackman, Jopie Hofland and Margaret Haase. Concerned about the shortage of quality low-cost rental homes in Ōpōtiki for people on a low fixed income, they decided to act. The Trust was formed and they started fundraising, making and selling patchwork quilts, and running market stalls and raffles.

The trust focus is primarily on providing social housing for retired beneficiaries, although some of our tenants are vulnerable younger people. The location of both the Richard Street and King Street sites is close to the town centre. All the units are maintained to a very high standard to ensure that they are comfortable, healthy homes- cheap to keep warm and dry in winter, and light and airy in summer. 

Prospective tenants are assessed on a needs basis and have to provide referees and financial information to support their application. The Trust strives to maintain a balance between Māori, non-Māori, male and female tenants and promotes living in harmony as one of its basic ideals. As well as providing accommodation for the elderly, or disabled, Rangimarie will also consider younger people if their circumstances are exceptional.

The Trust is a well managed housing charity with long term goals and aspirations meeting a critical need for shelter and creating a caring supportive housing community.
